Wild Strawberry Communications and the environment
Wild Strawberry Communications believes that, like society as a whole, it has a responsibility to safeguard the environment. Furthermore, we believe that sound environmental practices make good business sense. So we're committed to seeking to improve environmental performance continuously.
Environmental policy
We have developed an environmental policy that governs our behaviour. We will:
- assess the environmental impact of all historic, current and likely future operations. One of the directors is responsible for monitoring the policy and organising a formal review at least annually.
- minimise the use of all raw materials, energy and supplies
- work to raise awareness and encourage participation in environmental matters amongst clients, suppliers and subcontractors
- participate in community discussions about sustainability and the environment
Environmental performance guidelines
We've also put in place guidelines to enable us to put these principles into practice and conduct our business so as to minimise environmental impact:
- Annual reviews
- environmental impact will be subject to formal review at the end of each calendar year;
- our last review took place in January 2007: view the report
- Reducing the use of resources
- by using public transport/bicycle/feet for business travel or attendance at meetings where feasible;
- if public transport et al is not feasible, minimising car use and mileage as far as is possible and ensuring multiple-occupancy of cars;
- by delivering copy, proofs and correspondence electronically where possible;
- by using postal systems rather than couriers;
- by using recycled paper and recycling waste paper;
- by printing documents double sided whenever feasible;
- by using recycled printer inks;
- by reviewing insulation in offices and seeking to reduce heat loss;
- by using most sustainable heat sources available;
- by switching off equipment when not in use, even if only for a short period
- Raising awareness and encourage participation in environmental matters
- by asking for copies of environmental policies from suppliers;
- by thinking about resource impact of project delivery;
- by encouraging clients to use environmentally-sensitive products;
- by developing environmentally-sound ways of working with sub-contractors
- We will participate in community discussions about sustainability and the environment
- We respond to local and London-wide consultations on matters including transport, infrastructure and leisure space development, amenities, employment and refuse management.
Wild Strawberry Communications: environmental impact review review, January 2007
Reviewer: Gareth Glynn
This review of Wild Strawberry Communications environmental impact is intended to ensure we meet our commitment to improve environmental performance continuously.
Performance against environmental guidelines:
- Use of public transport/bicycle/feet for business travel or attendance at meetings where feasible: good
- Where public transport et al is not feasible, minimising car use and mileage as far as is possible and ensuring multiple-occupancy of cars: good
- Delivery of copy, proofs and correspondence electronically where possible: good
- Use of postal systems rather than couriers: good; couriers used rarely as last resort for v urgent deliveries. Scope for further improvement: review potential for using cycle couriers in preference to couriers with petrol-engined vehicles; use motorbikes in preference to van/car
- Using recycled paper and recycling waste paper: good, but scope for further improvement eg sourcing recycled files and wrapping materials
- Printing documents double sided whenever feasible: good
- Use of recycled printer inks: good
- Review of office insulation to reduce heat loss: ok; heavy curtain fitted at 55 Claverdale Road office to retain heat overnight. Scope for further improvement: need to review office insulation at 51 Therapia Road
- Use of most sustainable heat sources available: good: electricity is green tarrif. Need to review efficiency of heating home offices by domestic central heating system
- Switch off equipment when not in use, even if only for a short period: good
- Raising awareness and encourage participation in environmental matters amongst clients, suppliers and subcontractors: good, but scope for improvement; we need to get copies of environmental policies from suppliers
- Participation in community discussions about sustainability and the environment good: Gareth Glynn, director, sits on the Tulse Hill Working Group (THWG)
Action plan
- sustainability checklist to be introduced for quarterly monitoring starting 0407
- address all items marked ‘scope for improvement’, specifically;
- sourcing recycled files and wrapping materials
- review potential for using cycle couriers in preference to couriers with petrol-engined vehicles; use motorbikes in preference to van/car
- review office insulation at 51 Therapia Road, SE22
- review efficiency of heating home offices by domestic central heating system
- get copies of environmental policies from suppliers
- Report action taken on these issues at next annual review
